The Full Story
Thalassemia Food Project
Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that affects the body's ability to produce hemoglobin, leading to severe anemia and the need for regular blood transfusions. In Sri Lanka, Thalassemia is a significant health issue, especially among children, who require frequent hospital visits for transfusions to manage their condition. This project provides nutritious meals for children receiving treatment at a Thalassemia hospital, ensuring they receive proper nutrition during their hospital stays, which is crucial for their overall health and recovery during ongoing transfusion treatments.
The Hospital
This is the hospital in Anuradhapura Sri Lanka, where children with Thalassemia come several times a month for blood transfusions. During their stay, they need access to healthy food. This is what we provide.
The Patient Visits
Each child visits the hospital two to three times a month. During this time they stay in the Thalassemia children's ward while receiving their blood transfusions.
Working with the hospital
We also work with the hospital to find other ways to help these children. One of these includes partnering with the organization IronHearts, to provide sales channels for the products built by Thalassemia patients.
