We at Thrive Sri Lanka have recently introduced our One Million Meals program! In this blog post, we describe what One Million Meals is, why we started this program, and how you can get involved.
What is One Million Meals?
It is pretty much as it says. Our goal is to provide one million nutritious meals to Sri Lankans who would not get these meals otherwise.
Why is this important?
Sri Lanka is undergoing an unprecedented economic crisis - the worst seen in the country's history. According to the World Food Programme, over 30% of the country's residents are food insecure and require assistance.
How are we helping?
Our first project was with the World Food Program. Through the assistance of generous donors - we provided $25,000 to World Food Program USA to set up a targeted fund for Sri Lanka in 2022. Through the course of a year - this fund provided over $32,000 targeted specifically for Sri Lanka. The WFP is a tremendously respected charity that had the ability to bring critical nutrition to the country at a time when imports were severely limited. Given the average cost of a WFP meal, this fund was able to provide about 64,000 meals. You can learn more about this project here.
Our second project is Sustainable Community Foods. In this model, we are directly providing funds to rural sri lankan communities that are providing school lunch programs for their children. You can learn more about this program here.
Our goal is to run projects such as these to provide a total of One Million Meals in the next few years - ideally in as little time as possible!
